A difficult start
Nona Kukhina was 17 and one week into medical school in Minsk when serious illness interrupted everything. What followed was everything cancer treatment demanded: chemotherapy, radiation, a six-hour operation to remove the tumor from her neck, and, in the process, her carotid artery was severed. The surgeons told her parents there was nothing more they could do. The recovery was long, and it cost her family a great deal.
She survived because two Chinese doctors happened to be training in the same ward. They repaired the severed artery by hand. Nona's mother, refusing to accept the prognosis, tried many things for her daughter. Four days in, the tumor began to shrink. Within a month, it was gone.
Her father never fully recovered from those years and died young. Nona did recover. She went back to medical school, finished with honours, and took out of it a conviction that shaped the rest of her life: a setback does not get to decide what you do next.
From student to physician
She rebuilt her life in Israel from nothing: new language, new country, no safety net. She won one of the most competitive seats in medicine at Tel Aviv University, then stayed on to teach anatomy. But teaching wasn't enough. She wanted to build something.
It was at the university that she came across research that upended what people assumed about the Dead Sea: that despite its name it was alive, and that the micro-organisms surviving in that extreme water could be put to use in skincare and nutrition.
So she and her husband, Mikhail Shneerson, sold everything, their apartment, their car, their security, and bet it all on that idea.
A conviction, made into a company.
That bet became LENOM, a research clinic in Tel Aviv, and then a manufacturing operation built to ISO and GMP standards. In 1994 it became Dr. Nona International. Three decades on, the range is sold in the United States, Europe and the CIS; this store ships within Israel.
